I can't be the only one who saw him—the little boy squatting at the doorway, who was he?

Last updated 2026-09-24 — For some reason, whenever travel journalists share ghost stories, they often turn out to be from "Thailand." I'm not sure if it's because Thai horror movies are just that good, but even though Thailand today is vastly different from what it was ten years ago, those more remote suburbs or less developed islands still tend to give people the creeps. The following ghost story also comes from a fellow journalist. Though it didn’t sound particularly frightening at first, every time I think back to it, just passing by my own room door gives me the chills.

For some reason, whenever travel journalists share ghost stories, they often turn out to be from "Thailand." I'm not sure if it's because Thai horror movies are just that good, but even though Thailand today is vastly different from what it was ten years ago, those more remote suburbs or less developed islands still tend to give people the creeps. The following ghost story also comes from a fellow journalist. Though it didn’t sound particularly frightening at first, every time I think back to it, just passing by my own room door gives me the chills.

Back then, a group of them went to the Thai countryside for an interview and stayed in rather distinctive wooden cabins, with each person having their own room. As evening approached, the journalist, having nothing much to do but feeling the room was too hot, decided to find a place to rest outside. Since the cabins were connected in a row, walking along the corridor meant passing by the rooms of fellow journalist friends. As he passed by the doorway of a female journalist, A, he noticed a little boy squatting at the door. But he didn’t think much of it and simply walked past.

After resting for a while, A came out of her room and greeted him. He casually asked A who the little boy was. To his surprise, A looked puzzled and said, "I didn’t see any little boy?" He looked toward A’s doorway and realized the boy had vanished. But there was only one stairway in the corridor—if he had left, he would have had to pass right by them. There was no way they wouldn’t have seen him. Though he figured it might have been a trick of the light, the journalist couldn’t shake the eerie feeling. Even stranger, from that day on, A developed a persistent high fever and remained sick for several days even after returning to Taiwan.
