The desserts by Toshi Yoroizuka truly amazed me. Although I love sweets, I haven’t had much exposure to French pastries in recent years and usually prefer the home-style handmade cakes from cafes. But this trip to Tokyo gave me the most delicious dessert I’ve had in Japan (just my personal opinion)

After returning from Europe, Toshi Yoroizuka opened several pastry shops in Tokyo, among which the one at Roppongi Midtown is the most unique. It specializes in made-to-order French pastries, and sometimes you might even meet Toshi Yoroizuka himself. After taking night photos at Roppongi Hills that day, I walked over to Midtown and arrived at around 7:30 pm. We waited about half an hour before being seated.

The original menu was in Japanese. When I asked the staff if they had an English menu, they handed me this one with detailed illustrations. All freshly made pastries are 1,240 JPY.

There aren’t many seats in the shop – just counter seating surrounding the pastry-making area, allowing you to watch the chefs work up close.

The shop doesn’t require you to order a drink, so I only ordered a dessert, which also came with a complimentary pre-dessert cold soup.

Before digging into the dessert, I had a slightly salty cold soup, which helped cleanse my palate. The pre-dessert soup alone was impressive, making me even more excited for the main pastry.

Millefeuille aux Fraises 1240Q?/strong>
Three layers of crisp puff pastry encased fresh strawberries and custard cream, topped with a scoop of pistachio ice cream.

What really amazed me was the pistachio ice cream ball – it had a smooth texture and rich pistachio aroma. Even after a month, it still left a deep impression on me.

The hardest part of eating a mille-feuille is knowing when to cut in. With something like Paul’s mille-feuille, I’m quite skilled at slicing, but Toshi Yoroizuka’s strawberry mille-feuille was just too beautiful – I didn’t want to ruin the artwork-like presentation. I tried my best not to make the dessert fall apart. The pastry had the right level of crispness without crumbling into bits, the custard cream was silky and light, and it didn’t feel heavy even as you ate more. The elements complemented each other perfectly, resulting in a well-balanced French pastry. At this price of 1,240 JPY, you can enjoy such a delightful harmony of textures and flavors – truly worth every penny.
