Taoyuan Yunnan Thai Cuisine – rice noodles, rice vermicelli, and crispy roti!

There are two Yun Tai Guan (Yunnan Thai restaurants) next to the Taoyuan City Government. Both have been around for quite a while. For family gatherings, we’ve always gone to the one near Niu Jia Zhuang – Li Ji. It’s not that it’s particularly delicious, but my mom prefers convenience. This branch has fewer customers so no reservation is needed, and the prices and food are decent enough.

I remember coming here to eat at least three or four times, though each time was years apart. This time, the gathering had more people and we ordered more dishes. The first dish, a cold large sliced meat platter, was tangy, fragrant, and refreshing. The seasoning was fairly standard. I can’t recall who ordered the pork trotter aspic, but it used the exact same seasoning as the sliced meat – very repetitive!

My family especially loves ordering po su bao (flaky layered buns). These buns are made by layering oil dough to create a flaky texture. They’re not greasy, but rather soft and springy. However, the dough on this day seemed a bit too dry.

Yunnan rice noodles (mi gan) and rice vermicelli (mi xian) are my favorites. The two soups here have slight differences – the mi gan broth is richer, while the mi xian broth is lighter but still enjoyable. Both pots were completely finished off.

Among the fried dishes, there were Sichuan peppercorn chicken and moon shrimp pancakes. The Sichuan peppercorn chicken had a crispier exterior, though the flavor didn’t leave much of an impression. The moon shrimp pancake was really thin. Overall, the Sichuan peppercorn chicken was better.

For accompanying dishes, there was coconut chicken and lemon fish – both mild in taste, perhaps suiting the preferences of the average Taiwanese.

My family said the crispy roti drizzled with condensed milk is something they order every time. It’s crunchy with a nice oil aroma without being greasy, and you can somehow eat a lot of it. My mom said this time it was fried a bit too long, making it slightly burnt and hard.

For less than NT$2,000, six adults ate their fill. We still liked the rice noodles and rice vermicelli the best.
