After the New Year’s Eve reunion dinner, how will you spend your Spring Festival holiday? Some choose to travel abroad, while others opt for domestic island-hopping tours. With the recent trend of mobile camping becoming popular, it’s not only a great way to save on accommodation costs at hotels or homestays, but also allows you to enjoy festive home-cooked meals that are even more “sumptuous.” Aside from being the first to wish nature a “Happy New Year,” you’ll also experience the freshness of outdoor fun!
Ruisui, Shitiping, and Xiaoyeliu are three public campgrounds in the Hualien-Taitung area, managed by the East Coast National Scenic Area Administration. As such, they offer affordable prices. Take Ruisui Campground as an example: renting a campsite costs between NT$300 and NT$500, all equipped with designated parking spaces, water, electricity, and bathroom facilities, as well as barbecue grills and wooden tables and chairs. In addition, the site has public lighting, well-maintained facilities, and is situated next to vast green rice fields and distant mountains, offering wide-open views. Its convenient location also means it’s not far from various attractions across Hualien and Taitung, making it very popular among campers.

The “Ruisui Campground” has 35 covered wooden deck campsites, all of which were fully booked. Groups of campers gathered to drink and enjoy tea, while children played freely on the grass, creating a lively atmosphere full of New Year cheer. Some friendly groups even went around toasting fellow campers, helping everyone make new friends who share the same passion for camping. Others planned to head to Ruisui the next day for fresh milk and a relaxing hot spring bath to keep warm in the winter.
During the interview, we happened to meet a large family from Tainan. They rose early on the first day of the New Year, traveled along the South Link Highway via Taitung, stopping to enjoy famous scenic spots along the way. By nightfall, they arrived at this campsite by the Xiuguluan River. Under the glow of the camp lights, they set up their tents, reminisced about the beautiful sights seen during the day, and gathered to enjoy a rich “New Year’s feast.” This is probably the most appealing part of camping!
