Taiwan’s Largest “Stand-Up Paddleboarding” Training Base Opens in Hsinchu’s Qingcao Lake

Hsinchu’s “Qingcao Lake Water Recreation Center” officially opened today (the 16th). Here, visitors can not only enjoy the scenic views around Qingcao Lake but also experience the cutting-edge water sport of “stand-up paddleboarding.” Coupled with nearby tourist attractions, it aims to become a new-generation travel hotspot in the area.

Qingcao Lake boasts Hsinchu’s most unique and abundant natural lake scenery. It was once a beloved play spot for many locals during their childhoods. However, due to sediment accumulation over time, the lake nearly turned into a grassy field, making various water activities difficult to conduct. In recent years, the city government has carried out dredging work and built infrastructure such as lakeside wooden boardwalks and lighting, restoring Qingcao Lake’s picturesque landscape.

Last year (2016) in August, operators piloted stand-up paddleboarding activities at Qingcao Lake. After Mayor Lin Chih-chien tried it out, he found that the water was calm with minimal currents—making it highly suitable for promoting the sport. Planning then commenced, and after nearly a year, the activity has officially launched.

“Stand-up paddleboarding” combines elements of canoeing and surfing boards. It is easy to operate and beginner-friendly. Qingcao Lake is expected to become Taiwan’s largest dedicated training base for the sport. Additionally, other courses such as SUP yoga, SUP fitness, and SUP racing training will be offered.

To make it more convenient for visitors to explore Qingcao Lake, a new YouBike rental station has been set up opposite Yanbo Hotel. Travelers can ride YouBikes along the lakeside path to discover various spots around the lake and enjoy its scenic beauty.
