If you’re looking for unique local scenery in Bangkok, Thailand, head to the Ban Bang Krachao Artists’ Houses on the outskirts to admire the charm of traditional stilt-house living. Venture off the main road into the narrow alleys, and you’ll discover a hidden gem—a street lined with century-old wooden houses built along the river. The area is home to many local artists, and the laid-back pace makes you feel like you’ve entered a different country.

This quaint riverside community is located in the northwestern suburbs of Bangkok, a hidden oasis tucked away in the bustling city. Because the surrounding alleys are too narrow for large vehicles, taking a boat is the most convenient way to get there if you’re traveling independently.

The locals live a leisurely and individualistic life, and the river is teeming with tilapia of all sizes. Since the river is near a temple, locals do not fish here but instead sell fish feed to visitors. Unlike the typical Thai street vendors, this area is filled with handmade crafts, art galleries, and cafes, where you can explore and find unique trinkets.

Besides sipping coffee and admiring the riverside scenery, you must not miss the traditional Thai black-mask puppet theater. The Klong Bang Luang Puppet Show, which has performed in Taiwan, features humorous puppeteers performing against a bamboo-forest backdrop, creating a lively atmosphere accompanied by soulful music. The performance adds even more charm to the riverside art village and is well worth a visit for travelers.
