Nostalgic Hong Kong-style desserts: HowToTrip’s velvety steamed milk and fluffy scrambled eggs

Coming to Hong Kong, it’s a real pity to have breakfast at a hotel. Hong Kong has many traditional cha chaan tengs that serve incredibly authentic local breakfasts—I’d say they’re truly one of a kind. Australia Dairy Company, whether you look at its signage, exterior, or interior, is full of nostalgic Hong Kong charm.

One branch of Australia Dairy Company, located on Portland Street in Jordan, is truly unforgettable. Even though the place is so popular you might have to queue, the moment you taste the food, you’ll be so glad you waited. When we arrived, there was already a long line.

Australia Dairy Company is one of the two best places in Hong Kong for steamed milk. The other is Yee Shun Milk Company, also in Jordan. I find it interesting that both call their shops “companies.” Have you ever seen an eatery named as a company in Taiwan?

What is steamed milk? It’s a bit like pudding, but likely because it’s made entirely from egg whites, it’s exceptionally smooth and has an amazing texture—you absolutely have to try it.

Another must-have is their scrambled eggs. You can order just the scrambled eggs or a scrambled egg sandwich. I’ve never had such delicious scrambled eggs before—so fragrant and fluffy, it’s absolutely heavenly. I almost wanted to eat the plate too. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water.

Their milk tea is also great, and the metal cups and plates are super retro—I love them.

The place is so busy that the staff move very quickly, so if you manage to get in line and get seated, order fast, eat fast, and leave fast. Because it’s so busy, lingering too long might get you asked to leave. But remember, when eating out in Hong Kong, it’s all about the food—the service standards aren’t quite the same as in Taiwan, so don’t compare.
