Last updated 2026-09-24 — Growing up playing around his grandparents’ Japanese-style dormitory, he couldn’t bear to see old houses being demolished one after another. A graduate in management information systems, he pursued interdisciplinary postgraduate studies and even went to a factory to learn woodworking. “This old house hadn’t been lived in for over 40 years, and it looked like a haunted house inside.” He wasn’t scared off by the dilapidated condition. “Because no one’s been living here, the Japanese-style layout and old flavors have been preserved.”

Walking into the leisurely Xingzhong Street in Chiayi City, rows of gray-tiled wooden houses are scattered across the street. “Jiama Ju” looks like an ordinary home in the countryside of Japan. I couldn’t help but peek in out of curiosity. “Have a seat and have a cup of tea!” said Xue Junpeng, the young owner dressed casually, warmly greeting me.
