Glimmering Lights Await: The Firefly Eco-Tour in Aowanda Has Officially Begun

Aowanda National Forest Recreation Area, celebrated for its beautiful natural scenery throughout the seasons, has officially entered firefly season. The Aowanda Nature Education Center has also launched a series of firefly-viewing activities. Guests staying overnight can join the evening firefly guided tours from April 27 to May 17, and in May, there will be four two-day, one-night "Mabo Mini Trips – Firefly Starry Night" themed events, leading visitors to admire the forest illuminated by countless sparkling lights as if the starry sky has descended upon the woods, bringing back childhood memories.

The Nantou Forest District Office stated that Aowanda National Forest Recreation Area boasts abundant and clean water resources, diverse and intact forest vegetation, and an average annual temperature of around 19°C—perfect conditions for the growth and reproduction of fireflies. Between April and May each year, the dark forest glows with tiny lights, mainly from species such as black-winged fireflies, red-chested black-winged fireflies, giant female glowworms, and giant black fireflies, with black-winged fireflies being the most numerous. Firefly enthusiasts should plan their visit accordingly.

To welcome firefly season, the Aowanda Nature Education Center offers an additional nighttime firefly-guided tour for just NT$200 per night for overnight guests from 7:00 PM between April 27 and May 17. There will also be four two-day, one-night in-depth eco-tours on May 7, 9, 14, and 16that allow visitors to enjoy the beauty of nature and the forest’s symphony of birdsong and insect sounds during the day. As night falls, the shining stars of the event—fireflies—take center stage, giving guests a chance to experience this magical nocturnal world with their hearts.
