So stunning it bursts with girlish delight—Taiwan’s most sprawling “Wisteria Garden”

If you’ve never seen the magnificent sight of wisteria in full bloom, you wouldn’t fall head over heels in love with it. Truly, there’s beauty in numbers—what I saw before was all too dainty.

I hadn’t originally planned to visit the Tamsui Wisteria Café Garden. But thinking that the flowers were in peak bloom and I had free time, I figured if I didn’t go this year, I’d definitely regret it when I’m busy next year. So I hopped on my bike and headed straight for the northern coast.

The Tamsui Wisteria Café Garden isn’t located in downtown Tamsui. It’s on Provincial Highway 2, heading toward Qianshuiwan. After passing St. John’s University, make a right turn onto County Road 5-1, and you’ll see the Wisteria Café.

This year’s opening hours are from March 15 to May 3. It’s only open for a little over a month each year. The owner must be truly obsessed with flowers—this kind of investment and upkeep can’t be very cost-effective. I think charging an admission fee of NT$150 is quite reasonable; it’s pretty much the limit.

As I walked in, I was immediately struck by the sight of wisteria covering the entire garden—not just a short tunnel as I had imagined. The area is quite large, and I have no idea what lucky encounter made the owner so passionate about wisteria, planting it so densely.

In the past, I’d only seen small patches of wisteria on trellises, sparse like decorations. But when I came to the Tamsui Wisteria Café and saw the grand, exuberant blooms, I truly understood the charm and beauty of wisteria.

An elderly auntie asked me to take a photo for her. Her opening line was hilarious: “This place is so beautiful it’s making me cry. Please, you have to take a picture for me, or I’ll regret it for the rest of my life.”

Since I could help ease her regret with just a little effort, I didn’t hesitate for a second and took out her huge iPad to snap away seriously.

The auntie twirled and turned like a young girl, pouring out all her inner thoughts candidly: “So beautiful~ How can it be this beautiful~ Take pictures of me from every angle~ Keep going~ Don’t stop~ Get some close-ups and some far shots~ It’s so gorgeous~ I’m so happy~”

My head was spinning a bit, but she kept spinning and jumping. I dutifully captured more than ten different angles. Let’s just say, having a DSLR on your back, looking friendly, and being a solo traveler makes you the perfect candidate for strangers to ask for photos. I ended up taking photos for about five groups of people today, and two kindly returned the favor and took photos of me.

As I turned a corner, I ran into the auntie again. She had found a new enthusiastic photographer and continued twirling and jumping with him. It was such a fun scene—I was happily watching from the side. The auntie was just missing the M-leg pose and a kissy face.

Since I hadn’t expected the blooms to be so spectacular, I showed up in the afternoon, and there were always crowds in my photos. If you’re with a group and want a lively atmosphere, any time is fine. But if you’re a photographer aiming for clean shots, you should go as early as possible—like at the Tianyuan Temple, arriving right when it opens at 8 AM to catch empty-scene shots.

The wisteria isn’t only cascading over trellises—it’s also been trained into tree shapes. That really opened my eyes. Wisteria blooming like a tree is also stunning, resembling a tree hung with grapes.

Purple irises are also in full bloom, complementing the wisteria beautifully. Having these two purple-flowering plants in full bloom within the same garden creates an incredibly dreamy scene.

The Wisteria Café Garden is divided into two areas. The more spectacular floral display is in the café section. The other area is more like a nursery, where not only wisteria is planted, but also various other landscape flowers and trees, allowing visitors to enjoy not just wisteria but also seasonal colors.

Visiting the Tamsui Wisteria Café Garden today was truly an eye-opener. The wisteria blooms were so breathtaking they brought tears to my eyes. There’s beauty in numbers, and I’m also grateful to the garden owner for their dedicated cultivation.
