A Taoyuan ice cream shop with a different flavor every day — check Facebook first if you want to try

As the weather gets warmer, many people crave refreshing and cool treats. In Bade District, Taoyuan City, there’s a gelato shop called Mr. Gelato that offers a different flavor each day, and the flavors are only announced on Facebook after the store opens. These flavors are created through the owner’s experimentation, development, and inspiration gathered from various sources. It’s estimated that over 100 flavors have been offered since the shop opened.

Owner Hsu Yen-kai said that because he used to work as a bartender and has a discerning palate, since opening the shop, aside from constantly striving to satisfy customers’ taste buds, he has also developed many adult-oriented alcoholic flavors. In addition to classic flavors like vanilla, blueberry, and strawberry, there are also unique options such as popcorn, butter whiskey, Sicilian pistachio, various Japanese teas, chocolate, and even local Taiwanese flavors like moro orange and Irwin mango, which take center stage in the display case depending on the season.

Hsu Yen-kai recalled the early days of starting the business, when he took the gelato shop’s business plan to the bank to apply for a loan. At the time, the loan officer had no confidence in the shop and was only willing to lend half the requested amount. After the store officially opened and began operating, the officer came for an inspection and tried a few bites of the gelato. Immediately, their opinion of Hsu changed, and they even tried several more flavors. Before leaving, the officer told Hsu:“If you need another loan, feel free to come talk to us again!”This also gave Hsu even more confidence in his gelato.
