Wild lilies bloom across the mountains — listen to the “white trumpets” sounding nature’s call along the North Coast

Vast expanses of “white trumpets” are now heralding spring on the North Coast. The North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area Administration reports that April and May are peak months for lily blooms, with large swaths of white floral seas flourishing along the cliffs of Shimen and Jinshan on the North Coast. Paired with blue skies, the ocean, and the Fugui Cape Lighthouse, they create one of the most stunning coastal landscapes in northern Taiwan.

The North Coast Administration notes that the lilies planted between Shimen and Jinshan are native to Taiwan and the result of over a decade of conservation efforts. Their most beautiful blooming period occurs every April and May.

The North Coast Administration points out that there are two key periods to admire the lily blooms along the North Coast. With May as the dividing line, before the end of May you can visit Shimen’s Baishawan, Linshanbi, and the Fugui Cape Lighthouse Trail to enjoy the flowers while facing the sea breeze and watching waves crash against the shore — a uniquely delightful experience. After May, it’s recommended to head to Jinshan’s Shitoushan, Shuiwei, and Fagushan, where you can listen to the “white trumpets” playing spring’s melody while also exploring historical remnants from former military coastal defense sites.

The conservation of native Taiwanese wild lilies is no easy task. The North Coast Administration also reminds the public not to illegally pick or trample the flowers. Such actions not only ruin the scenery but may also be against the law. Let’s all work together to protect the local natural ecology so more people can enjoy the beauty of the North Coast.

Legal tidbit: According to Article 64 of the Development of Tourism Act, those who damage plants or flowers within designated scenic areas may be fined NT$5,000 or more.
