The classic red bean pancake gets a hipster makeover—singing “Sometimes”!

Sometimes, choosing a good name really matters. Pair red beans with a line from a red bean-themed song, and suddenly it all feels artsy—even though it’s just a red bean pancake. Anyway, I hopped on my bike and went. It’s actually right next to Wei Re Shan Qiu, and if you want, you can even grab a pineapple cake while you’re there. The shop design is very hipster-style too, with a small round sign hanging outside, tucked away in a corner of the garden—you could easily walk right past it without noticing. Because I’m the kind of person who thinks it’s totally fine not to queue, I didn’t pay attention at first. Then someone commented, “Wow, there was actually a line!” That’s when I remembered it’s supposedly one of those “legendary long-queue shops.” Hahaha. But when I went, it was just opening time, so there weren’t many people. You can just walk in and buy whatever you want.

There are only three flavors of red bean pancakes: red bean, cream, and mashed potato cheese—one sweet, one sweet, and one savory. The mashed potato cheese one actually looked really tempting, and now I regret not trying it.

It was super hot that day, so I ordered an iced black tea first to cool down. Turns out it was unexpectedly delicious—made with unique-flavored Hong Yu black tea—and they offer it sugar-free, which is great. As for the red bean pancakes, they were still slightly warm when I got them, with generous fillings. The red bean flavor was mild, the cream was soft, sweet, and smooth, and having one every now and then is pretty nice.
