Who says farming has to stick to a rustic theme? The Pingtung International Painted Rice Art Festival combines cartoon-themed painted rice fields, integrating technology and cultural creativity into agriculture. Now, it’s adding a rock element by inviting 12 well-known underground bands from the Kaohsiung-Pingtung area to perform live in the rice fields. Rock out and shout at the Painted Rice Festival on May 2 and 3.

The bands performing in the fields — including Band Lunch Magazine, The Judgment of Melos, Shimen Air Band, Erotic Gatekeeper, and Chaotic Interweave — are all natives of Pingtung. Among them is professional sound engineer Chen Jianfu, who is also a seasoned chicken farmer with over 10 years of experience. Chen said that as a native Pingtung farmer, he returned to his hometown and approached things from a musical perspective. By combining technology and music, the field concerts breathe new life into Pingtung’s agriculture.

In addition, the “Live in the Fields” event has also invited the renowned band “Clown Electric Big Band” to show support from the south, as well as local mural artist “Jiesheng Tiaotiao” from Kaohsiung, who uses popular mural techniques to depict scenes of rural life and decorate the event venue.
