Japan is one of the world’s most beloved travel destinations for global tourists, but in the past, the lack of comprehensive WiFi facilities was often seen as a drawback. In recent years, this issue has gradually improved, with more attractions and trains now offering free WiFi. Below is a list of subways and railways that currently provide free WiFi—handy to know, even if you don’t end up using it.

1. Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Tokyo Metro Subways
Since December 2014, the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation has installed free WiFi hotspots at 143 stations across Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Tokyo Metro subways. Each session allows up to 3 hours of use, with unlimited sessions available. Passengers simply need to look for the dedicated WiFi logo at stations and connect via the app.
The only difference is that the two railway companies have different WiFi names: Tokyo Metropolitan Government Subway hotspots are called “Toei_Subway_Free_Wi-Fi,” while Tokyo Metro’s are “Metro_Free_Wi-Fi.”

2. Keisei Electric Railway Skyliner
The Keisei Electric Railway Skyliner, one of the fastest ways to travel to Narita Airport, began offering free WiFi service this year. Passengers can visit the ticket office at either the Skyliner Narita Airport Station or the Airport Terminal 2 Station, show their passport, and receive a free login account and password for the WiFi. Once logged in, users can enjoy free connectivity for up to 6 consecutive hours.

3. Keikyu Electric Railway
The Keikyu Electric Railway, which runs from Haneda Airport toward Tokyo and Yokohama, has provided free WiFi service since March 2014. Coverage includes Haneda Airport International Terminal Station, Haneda Airport Domestic Terminal Station, Shinagawa Station, certain cars within the Keikyu Line, and all Keikyu Airport Bus vehicles.
Passengers need to download a service voucher from the campaign website in advance, print it, and then redeem it at the “Keikyu Travel Service Center” in the International Terminal 2 Building at Haneda Airport upon arrival. After obtaining an ID and password card, they can log in online to start using the service. Usage is limited to 6 hours.

4. JR Yamanote Line
Starting this April, within 36 stations on the Tokyo Yamanote Line and Chuo Line—including a total of 41 stations and 5 JR East Japan Travel Service Centers (JR EAST Travel Service Center)—passengers can see the green free internet logo and connect to free WiFi. First-time users must log in with their email address. Each session lasts up to 3 hours, and unlimited repeat logins are allowed.

5. Tohoku Shinkansen
In addition to providing free WiFi on the Yamanote Line, JR East Japan also started offering free WiFi service in May on the E5 series “Hayabusa” trains running between Tokyo and Shin-Aomori on the Tohoku Shinkansen. Users can connect by looking for the “JR-EAST FREE Wi-Fi” logo.

6. Osaka “Nankai Electric Railway Namba Station”
To serve travelers, Nankai Electric Railway has set up eight free WiFi hotspots each at “Namba City” and “Namba Parks,” which are complexes connected to Namba Station. Passengers just need to find the “Osaka Free WiFi” logo to access the internet.

7. Haruka Limited Express
Considered by many travelers as the most comfortable way to travel from Kansai Airport to Kyoto and Osaka, the Haruka Limited Express has offered free WiFi service in train cars since December 2014.
Passengers can obtain a password in advance at the 1st Floor Passenger Service Center of Kansai Airport Terminal 1, Tennoji Mio Service Counter, Osaka STATION CITY, or Kyoto Station. Onboard the train, simply turn on the WiFi, select “JR-WEST_FREE_Wi-Fi,” enter the password, and connect. The login screen is also available in four languages—Chinese, English, Japanese, and Korean—for the convenience of non-Japanese speakers.
