The world’s first legal cannabis hotel opens in Colorado, USA

News about public figures using cannabis has recently sparked heated debates online over whether cannabis should be legalized, with arguments on both sides.According to the UK's Daily Mail, in fact, Colorado in the United States officially legalized the sale of cannabis in 2014, becoming the first region in the world to do so (in some U.S. states, patients can purchase cannabis with a doctor’s recommendation). There are about 30 stores selling cannabis products, which are also available at local vending machines.

After cannabis became synonymous with Colorado, visitors flocked from around the world — provided they are over 21 to purchase and possess it. In addition to cannabis retailers, the world’s first cannabis-themed hotel chain was born here. Aside from accommodation, it offers communal smoking equipment, massage services, and even serves cannabis-infused breakfast.

Located in Denver, the cannabis hotel “Adagio” is owned by Joel Schneider, a former New York-based lawyer. “Our goal is to make it different from anywhere else,” a philosophy that helped attract a huge number of guests in its first year of opening in 2014. This themed hotel centers around 420 cannabis culture — a term used within the community, marking International Cannabis Day and also a secret code among teens for smoking weed. Although it is now legal, consuming cannabis in public remains unlawful, though some hotels adopt more lenient attitudes than the law allows.

The success in Denver has expanded to the famous ski resort of Silverthorne. “Our guests are very diverse, aged from 25 to 75, and even come from as far as Japan, New Zealand, and the UK, because we offer a unique experience.” The hotel’s success has also led Schneider to plan an expansion, transforming it into a 172-hectare comprehensive entertainment ranch.
