Kyoto’s Kitchen: Three Must-Visit Popular Shops at Nishiki Market

For visitors to Kyoto, aside from shrines and temples, Nishiki Market — known as the “Kyoto Kitchen” — is also worth exploring. Located along the section of Nishiki-dori Street between Teramachi-dori and Takakura-dori in central Kyoto, this shopping street offers a wide variety of goods, including fish, fresh vegetables, dried foods, pickles, and everyday household items. It's a market that's great for food, shopping, and strolling.

Nishiki Market is home to many long-established shops and delicious food. The official Facebook page of KyotoVisit Kyoto Tw recommends three must-visit popular shops: Konnanmonja, Miki Kei Tamago, and Uchida Pickles.

Konnanmonja
Konnanmonja is a specialty shop dedicated to tofu products, offering items such as soy milk, soy milk doughnuts, soy milk ice cream, yuba (tofu skin), and soy milk cake. Among them, the soy milk doughnuts are the most popular.

Miki Kei Tamago
As the name suggests, Miki Kei Tamago specializes in egg products. Their most popular item is the egg roll (somewhat similar to tamagoyaki, but with a different texture). There’s often a queue at the entrance because the dashi (broth) is simmered with katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes) and kombu (kelp), giving the egg rolls not only an eggy flavor but also a sweet umami from the broth. Another popular product is their custard-filled bread.

Aside from yuba, matcha, and sweets, Kyoto is also famous for its preserved foods. Among the many pickle shops in Nishiki Market, Uchida Pickles, which has a history of over 100 years, is the most well-known. You can try various types of pickles at the tasting corner.
