Pilgrimage Time: Taiwan’s #1 Voted Fried Rice at This Popular Hawker Spot in Minsheng Community

Located in Minsheng Community, Minsheng Fried Rice was voted the best fried rice in Taiwan last year—but honestly, it’s pretty hard to say if it really is the best. But after winning that title, the line was endless, so I (Old K) never got a chance to try it, and eventually, I just forgot about it XD

One day when I passed by and saw no one waiting in line, I immediately parked and went in for a plate of fried rice.

For a small stall, starting at 90 NT for fried rice isn’t exactly cheap. But hey, it’s the #1 ranked one, so I had to give it a try. Aside from fried rice, they also offer stir-fried flat rice noodles, stir-fried rice vermicelli, stir-fried noodles, rice with gravy, and boiled noodles—quite a few choices. I went for the beef fried rice and added a bowl of soup. The types of soup aren’t listed on the board, so you have to ask the boss lady. Since fried rice tends to be oily, I opted for something lighter—a tomato, veggie, and egg drop soup.

Beef Fried Rice (120 NT)
The moment the fried rice arrived, I was shocked—was this not supposed to be beef fried rice? I had seen other people’s orders of shredded pork fried rice, which looked like normal rice with eggs and meat. In terms of portion size, it was decent, but the price matched that too XD

You could tell the rice was stir-fried until the grains were nice and separate, and the aroma was great. The shrimp paste flavor wasn’t too strong, but it was a bit oily and salty—overall, a pretty bold flavor.

Then there was the beef. It seemed marinated, but maybe a little over-salted. Since the fried rice itself was already quite flavorful, combining it with the beef made it overly salty. I think I would’ve preferred the regular version if I ordered it next time.

Tomato, Veggie, and Egg Drop Soup (40 NT)
This time, I was actually smart XD The soup was refreshing and just what I needed to cut through the greasiness. It wasn’t a huge portion, though, and it felt a bit pricey.

Old K’s Little Tip: Maybe I ordered the wrong flavor this time? Ended up with a super savory fried rice, but lucky for me, the soup saved the day XD This time I also saw people ordering rice with gravy and big braised noodles, which looked pretty good. If I don’t have to wait in line next time, I might give it another shot. Though it’d be even better if it were cheaper XD Fans of strong flavors should still give it a try.
