There is a widely circulated chart in the coffee community: a world map with darker colors highlighting the area between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, where coffee is grown.

At the same time, we will be surprised to find that many places in southern China are suitable for growing coffee, such as Yunnan, Guangxi, Guangdong, Hainan, and Taiwan. But when it comes to Chinese coffee, Yunnan coffee is far more famous than Hainan coffee. Why is that?

To put it simply, there are two reasons: the variety structure and the industrial DNA of Hainan and Yunnan are different. The variety in Hainan is Robusta, while the variety introduced to Yunnan was initially Arabica. In terms of industrial foundation, Yunnan coffee has received support from the local government, leading to continuous growth in coffee cultivation. In contrast, Hainan’s coffee industry has long struggled, with planting areas shrinking year after year. Despite strong market demand, raw materials remain insufficient. According to customs statistics, most Hainan coffee products rely on imported Vietnamese coffee to meet market needs.
