Yirgacheffe coffee beans are produced in the town of Yirgacheffe in the Sidamo region of southern Ethiopia, at an altitude of 1700–2100 meters. The area enjoys a cool and foggy climate year-round, with spring-like weather throughout the seasons. The terrain and unique cultivation system provide optimal conditions for growing premium coffee beans.

Here, most coffee is grown in people’s backyards, and you can see coffee trees growing under rubber trees.

Most of the coffee produced here is washed coffee, featuring unique floral and fruity notes.

The Yirgacheffe variety is a native variety. Technically, this type does not actually appear in the official coffee varietal classification system. It belongs to a botanical concept referring to species that naturally exist within a region rather than being introduced artificially.Ethiopia is considered the birthplace of Arabica coffee and is currently the only country in the world that does not need to rely on hybrid varieties. Therefore, it has the confidence to say its coffee is from original varieties, and in fact, it really is.

So, can the original variety be further subdivided? Of course. Typically, Ethiopian coffee producers give different coffee trees local names, but they usually don’t use scientific names — instead, they rely on native languages.

A cooperative might name a coffee tree after a local tree species that shares similar physical characteristics.

According to announcements by Ethiopian authorities, Ethiopia has approximately 2,000 coffee varieties, but fewer than 5% have been studied. It is uncommon in Africa's coffee-growing regions to find the same coffee variety in different areas. But they all share a general term: heirloom varieties.

Therefore, Ethiopian coffee bean heirloom varieties can actually be understood as blends of various strains.

As for the lack of further subdivision, it is due to multiple contributing factors.Due to Ethiopia’s limited economic and research capacity, and also for practical reasons, even though the country earns more revenue from coffee than before, it still remains in the downstream part of the coffee supply chain. To protect their coffee and their income, Ethiopia refers to all its coffee as heirloom varieties.
