Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, is a popular summer retreat and weekend leisure destination for Tokyo residents. Many wealthy individuals and celebrities have also purchased villas here for vacation purposes. Recently, Japanese social media reported that a huge villa near Nakakaruizawa has been completed, and rumors suggest that its owner is none other than Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft.

▲ “The villa built by Bill Gates in Karuizawa has been completed. Even from the outside, you can tell how huge this private villa is. It spans over 6,500 tsubo (approximately 230,000 square feet), and reportedly has three underground levels.”
It is said that the villa covers an area of about 20,000 square meters (approximately 215,278 square feet), with a building area of about 2,000 square meters (approximately 21,528 square feet). It features a fully enclosed design with a central courtyard, making it completely cut off from the outside world. According to the information provided in the tweet, the villa appears to have only one floor on the outside, but actually has three underground levels — a design quite different from typical residential homes. This has led to various speculations about the building’s true purpose, including theories that it could be a nuclear disaster shelter, an underground religious worship site, or a secret research laboratory. Some netizens who have visited the site noted that because the villa is built on a small hill and obscured by trees, it is almost entirely invisible from the outside, not to mention any activities of its residents.

However, someone once spotted Bill Gates waiting in line at a fast-food restaurant in his hometown of Seattle, USA. Perhaps when you visit Karuizawa in the future, you might run into the billionaire at a street corner or a fast-food joint.
