Sunshine Aquarium is located on the top floor of Sunshine City, a popular shopping mall in Toshima Ward, Ikebukuro, Tokyo. The newly renovated “Moon Jelly Sky Sensation” jellyfish exhibit boasts Japan’s largest panoramic jellyfish display area. Its 14-meter-long curved tank surrounds visitors with jellyfish when viewed from the front. Combined with sound effects, lighting, and aromas, it creates a dreamlike experience as if floating and dancing with the jellyfish in the ocean.

Inside the jellyfish screen display, the larger Pacific sea nettle jellyfish are notable for their 24 tentacles, each stretching up to 450 cm. The aquarium also includes a must-have circular underwater tunnel, where visitors can watch jellyfish swim overhead for a soothing experience. Additionally, “Moon Jelly Sky Sensation” features teardrop-shaped, circular, and cylindrical tanks, offering various perspectives to admire the elegant movements of the jellyfish.

By the way, the name “Moon Jelly Sky Sensation” is poetic, but Japanese speakers may find it quite straightforward. In Japanese, it’s read as Kurage Kuukan, where kurage (jellyfish) is written as Haiyue (literally “sea moon”), and “space” or “sensation” is also pronounced kuukan. In short, “Moon Jelly Sky Sensation” essentially means “Jellyfish Space,” showing the aquarium’s attention to detail in every aspect.
