One of Japan’s “Top 100 Famous Waters,” Kikuchi Gorge sees a magical summer phenomenon from late July to August. Due to the angle of the sun in the early morning, beams of sunlight illuminate the gorge. This limited-time "forest sunbathing" experience feels almost otherworldly, drawing photography enthusiasts from across Japan who flock here to secure the best spots for photos.

Earlier this year, multiple areas in Kyushu and western Honshu were hit by severe storms, with Kumamoto Prefecture being one of the hardest-hit regions. Fortunately, Kikuchi Gorge, located in the forested northern part of Kumamoto, escaped major damage such as landslides or road collapses. The main access roads remained intact, and unexpectedly, the water volume in the stream increased, adding even more power and drama to the photos.

For those hoping to capture the divine light, local photographers recommend arriving at the gorge’s trail entrance around 5:00 AM. It takes some time to walk from the entrance to the prime photo spots, and there are many fellow photography enthusiasts with the same goal—arriving early increases your chances of finding the best angles.

Kikuchi Gorge is located about 17 kilometers east of Kikuchi City in Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu, within a forested area. The elevation ranges from 500 to 800 meters, and the gorge stretches approximately 4 kilometers in length. With an average annual temperature between 11°C and 15°C, it’s not only a great summer retreat but also a year-round destination for outdoor activities.
