Ibaraki Prefecture’s Kasumigaura Seaside Park (Hitachi Seaside Park), a national government park, is a sacred spot for viewing baby blue eyes flowers. During the blooming season, the park is packed with flower enthusiasts, as over 5 million tiny blue flowers all gather on a small hill covering approximately 3.5 hectares — such breathtaking beauty is not easy to find elsewhere.

This year’s baby blue eyes (Baby Blue Eyes) flowering season coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic. The park announced that it would be closed to the public starting April 4. Although Japan lifted its state of emergency on Monday (May 25), flower viewers are expected to have to wait until next year to admire the spectacular blooms.

Visitors who missed this year’s blooming season shouldn’t be disappointed, as the park has created a VR video (watch the VR link) that allows people around the world to enjoy the beautiful scenery in 360 degrees through their computers.

Located about a 2-hour drive from Tokyo, Kasumigaura Seaside Park (Hitachi Seaside Park) covers 190 acres. In addition to baby blue eyes, visitors can also admire various seasonal flowers, such as roses, poppies, and corn poppies. Winter’s highlight, miscanthus grass, will make its appearance later. You can find information on the floral displays and other details on the official website.
