In addition to the dreamy purple of cascading wisteria blooms in spring, elegant irises are also quietly putting on a show. Hidden in the suburban area of Linkou, New Taipei City, lies a vast expanse of purple iris flowers that has drawn many flower-viewing visitors — an equally enchanting purple spectacle that rivals the beauty of wisteria.

The iris fields in Linkou are planted with large swaths of purple irises. Strolling along the field paths and watching the flowers sway gently in the breeze over the paddy fields, the faint fragrance blends with the tranquil surroundings, offering a moment of respite from the city’s hustle and bustle — truly soothing.

The best time to view irises lasts until mid-April, so flower enthusiasts should seize the opportunity. (Photo / lailizhen1)

The iris is the national flower of France. With its graceful blooms and a variety of colors, its English name “Iris” comes from the rainbow goddess in Greek mythology. The Linkou iris fields feature not only purple blooms but also intermingled patches of white and yellow irises, along with scattered red ones, adding layers of romance to the picturesque scenery.

Irises thrive in moist environments, so be mindful of muddy ground when entering the fields. Also, take care not to damage the hard work of the farmers who grow them. Entry to the flower fields for viewing and photography costs NT$50 per person. After enjoying the sea of blooms, you can also visit the nearby “Buffalo Pit” for a refreshing mini adventure.
