On April 7, three new COVID-19 (Wuhan pneumonia) cases were announced domestically, all imported from abroad. The total number of cases has reached 376.

Minister Chen Shih-chung held a press conference today wearing a mask.

[Domestic Epidemic Situation]

The newly confirmed cases today include one man and two women, all in their 20s. Their entry dates range from March 27 to 30, and their symptom onset dates range from March 30 to April 4. Their travel purposes were for study and family visits. They were discovered through home quarantine (2 cases) and home isolation (1 case).

The CECC stated that among today’s new cases, Case 374 was studying in the UK. After entering Taiwan on March 29, he returned home to undergo home quarantine. Starting April 4, he developed symptoms such as diarrhea, coughing, runny nose, and loss of smell. On the 5th, he proactively notified health authorities and arranged for a medical visit and test, and was confirmed positive today.

Case 375 traveled to France from February 25 to March 27 to visit family and also visited the UK, the Netherlands, and Belgium during that period. Upon returning to Taiwan, she underwent home quarantine and subsequently developed symptoms including nasal congestion, sore throat, loss of smell, mild wheezing, fever, and diarrhea between March 30 and April 2. On April 3, after contacting health authorities, she sought medical attention and was tested, and was confirmed positive today.

Case 376 is a friend of Case 370 and was studying in the US. He returned to Taiwan on March 30 together with Cases 370 and 371. During home quarantine, he was reclassified as a contact under home isolation because other passengers on the flight he took had tested positive. Case 376 developed symptoms including coughing, nasal congestion, runny nose, and nausea between April 2 and 5. He was arranged by health authorities for a medical visit and test, and was confirmed positive today.

[International Epidemic Situation]

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is expected to issue a state of emergency declaration on the evening of the 7th, covering Tokyo and seven prefectures and cities. The state of emergency will take effect at midnight on April 8 and last until May 6. It includes Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama (all in the Kanto region), Osaka, Hyogo (both in the Kansai region), and Fukuoka (in Kyushu). The public in these areas are strongly urged to avoid going out. With Tokyo’s confirmed cases exceeding 1,000 and Japan’s national total nearing 4,000, concerns about healthcare system collapse and large-scale community transmission have led to Japan’s first-ever implementation of a state of emergency.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s condition did not improve after testing positive and even worsened, leading to his transfer to intensive care. His pregnant fiancée, who is not yet married, has also tested positive. Queen Elizabeth II also delivered a televised address on April 5 to boost the confidence of the British people, expressing her belief in the strength of the British and hoping that after facing the epidemic together, everyone can reunite again.

In countries severely affected by the epidemic in Europe and the US, such as the US with over 360,000 confirmed cases and Spain with over 130,000, the US has even seen up to 27,000 new cases in a single day. The global total has surpassed 1.3 million. While the epidemic in Europe shows signs of slowing down after promoting social distancing and home isolation, the situation in the US remains intense with continuously surging case numbers.
