Sometimes, tucked away in the alleys, you’ll discover hidden gems — shops you might not usually notice, yet offer pleasant surprises. Not only are they serene, but their owners pour their hearts into offering the best to customers. “Dan” Coffee, located in Shanghai’s Tianzifang area, may have a small footprint, but it’s exquisitely designed and brimming with charm, perfectly capturing the spirit of a “handmade café.” From roasting coffee beans to baking cakes and cooking meals, every step is handled with strict attention to detail. Reading a book here while immersed in the rich scent of coffee is an immense joy.

Tianzifang is full of artistic flair, where you can often discover unique shops. The photo shows the counter at “Dan” Coffee.

Tianzifang is made up of numerous alleys, housing art galleries, small eateries, and specialty shops. Established in 2007, “Dan” serves not just as a café and coffee roasting workshop but also as a restaurant offering refined and healthy cuisine. Though it’s a bit tricky to find, its classic Chinese decor, wooden signage, and steep staircase are sure to leave a lasting impression on visitors.

The view from inside the shop is also filled with greenery.

Regulars often prefer the counter near the entrance, where they can watch the master brew coffee. Every step — from roasting to temperature control and drip brewing — is executed with great precision. The Japanese owner, Takayuki Niizuma, decided to settle here after marrying his wife from Shanghai. He devoted himself to his passion for coffee roasting, importing beans from 25 countries including Colombia, Brazil, Jamaica, Yemen, and Tanzania. True to his Japanese roots, he takes nothing less than perfection, hand-brewing cup after cup of rich, aromatic coffee.

Climbing up the steep wooden stairs, the second floor has only a few tables, perfect for a cozy meal or chat with friends. You can try the signature healthy chicken set from “Dan” Coffee, or go for options like hamburger steak, pasta, appetizers, or even Japanese-style oyakodon. If you’re not too hungry, sample the shop’s most famous handmade desserts — the must-try tiramisu and cheesecake are rich, creamy, and beloved by customers.

The café brews only one cup of coffee at a time, and customers come from all over the world.
