The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) of Taiwan's Ministry of Health and Welfare announced on March 28 that there were 16 new confirmed cases, bringing the total to 283, including 16 imported cases and 2 locally transmitted infections.

[Domestic Outbreak Situation]

The newly reported cases today include 2 domestic and 14 imported. The domestic cases are a man in his 50s (Case 268) and a man in his 30s (Case 269),

both of whom have no travel history abroad. The imported cases consist of 9 women and 5 men, aged between their teens and 60s, with entry dates ranging from March 6 to 26 and symptom onset dates between March 1 and 25.

The activity locations of the infected individuals before symptom onset included North America (the U.S., Canada), Europe (the U.K., Spain, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Ireland), Oceania (Australia), and Asia (the Philippines), with study or work being the primary reasons for travel.

[Global Outbreak Situation]

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on the 27th that he had tested positive for COVID-19 and informed the public via a live broadcast, stating that he had begun self-isolation at home. India has announced a three-week movement restriction and lockdown. After Japan announced the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics, the country reported a record single-day high of 109 new cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 1,478, with 52 deaths.

Regarding recent reports that UK citizens expressed through the media about their daughter and her foreign boyfriend being required to undergo 14 days of home quarantine in Taiwan and claiming poor treatment, after clarification and an apology from the woman, the BBC removed the article. Considering that the content of the report involved false statements, which not only damaged Taiwan's international image but could also lead to misunderstandings among various sectors, causing the public to be unwilling to comply with quarantine measures and adversely affecting epidemic prevention efforts, and potentially violating the "Communicable Disease Control Act" and the "COVID-19 Quarantine and Isolation Subsidy Measures," the CECC carefully assessed the situation and decided not to grant the two foreign travelers epidemic prevention compensation.

[Epidemic Statistics]

As of now, a total of 283 cases have been confirmed (Cases 268 to 283 added today), including 241 imported cases and 42 domestic cases. Among the confirmed cases, 2 have died, 30 have been released from quarantine, and the rest remain hospitalized under stable conditions.

The CECC pointed out that globally, there have been 578,845 confirmed cases across 177 countries/regions. The highest numbers are in the U.S. with 100,717 cases, Italy with 86,498, China with 81,394, Spain with 64,059, and Germany with 42,288. There have been 26,703 deaths worldwide, with the highest numbers in Italy (9,134), Spain (4,858), China (3,295), Iran (2,378), and France (1,995).
