Taiwan has many decommissioned railways that have become popular tourist attractions. Among them, the remnants of old train tracks passing through tunnels add a uniquely storybook beauty to the scenery, attracting photography enthusiasts from all over. Below are four popular old railway tunnel entrances in central Taiwan that are trending on IG.

1. Houli No. 8 Tunnel
The No. 8 Tunnel is located next to the Tai’an Railway Culture Park in Houli, Taichung. Part of the Old Mountain Line, it can be accessed by crossing the Zhenzhuan Bridge. With a history of 100 years and a total length of 518.6 meters, this overgrown and sparsely visited tunnel requires you to push through layers of wild vegetation to explore. The abundance of wild plants adds to the tunnel’s unique atmosphere, resembling the fantastical world you enter after going through a tunnel in the movie "Spirited Away."

2. Da’an River Iron Bridge
Also located near the old Tai’an Station, the Da’an River Iron Bridge is a century-old railway bridge once hailed as “Taiwan’s most beautiful railway branch line.” It was used by the Japanese to transport goods and connect the north and south. From a distance, the bridge is majestic, with one end connecting to the southern entrance of the No. 7 Tunnel in Sanyi, Miaoli. The view from the tunnel entrance showcases the spectacular Flower Truss Steel Bridge — an unforgettable sight.

3. Miaoli Old Mountain Line Rail Bike
Miaoli boasts abundant resources along the Old Mountain Line railway. Built in 1908, the Old Mountain Line features three iron bridges, four stations, and eight tunnels. Recently, it launched the “Rail Bike,” Taiwan’s only cycling experience on an active railway track. Riders pedal from Shengxing Station through Tunnel No. 2, cross Yutengping Bridge, and loop back at the northern entrance of Tunnel No. 6, enjoying lush mountain views and the nostalgic mystery of the railway.

4. Qiding Mother-and-Son Tunnels
Qiding Station in Zhunan, Miaoli, is not only home to a Taiwan-version “Your Name” staircase, but also nearby historic site “Qiding Mother-and-Son Tunnels” (Qiding No. 1 and No. 2 Tunnels), which are hot photo spots. After the tracks were abandoned, the area was transformed into a spacious, walkable path. The scattered holes on the tunnel walls are said to be historical marks left by WWII-era attacks on trains. These weathered, ancient tunnels silently witness Taiwan’s history.
