The “Austronesian Tribal Wedding,” now in its eighth year, will hold a series of related events from April 28 to May 13 this year. Six couples will follow the traditional chief’s wedding ceremony of the Paiwan people, completing their uniquely meaningful and romantic weddings with the blessings of family, tribal members, and visiting tourists. The organizers also offer two package tour options to allow the public to experience indigenous culture more deeply.

Held annually in October and hosted in rotation by Sandimen, Majia, and Wutai—three townships in northern Pingtung—the “Austronesian Tribal Wedding” has been moved to spring this year to avoid overlapping with the Harvest Festival. It is now named the “2012 Austronesian Tribal Wedding – Love Tied to Dawu Mountain” series. Through the traditional indigenous wedding, visitors can enjoy a glimpse of important cultural heritage such as indigenous clothing, cuisine, songs, weaving, and rituals. They can also explore the indigenous craft market, sample local cuisine, and learn about regional agricultural specialties.

Since its inception, the “Austronesian Tribal Wedding” has witnessed the weddings of over a hundred couples. Registrations for this year are already full. Couples interested in participating should stay tuned for registration information one month before the event officially begins. The local organizers will provide free arrangements for food, accommodation, and the wedding ceremony for two days and one night. Accompanying family and friends can also enjoy food and lodging at discounted rates.

This three-week event is presented under four major themes: cultural heritage, romantic weddings, rural ingenuity, and classic tribes. Free shuttle services are available at Neipu Vocational High School on Saturdays and Sundays, along with free parking. Additionally, a 599 NTD one-day tour and a 2,599 NTD two-day tour are offered, taking participants to attend the Austronesian wedding and experience local craftsmanship and lifestyle. Interested individuals can contact Hua-Hsin, Lian-An, or Huikang Travel Agencies. Details about the Austronesian Tribal Wedding series can be found on the official website of the Maolin National Scenic Area Administration at www.maolin-nsa.gov.tw. Visitors can also pick up the “2012 Austronesian Tribal Wedding – Love Tied to Dawu Mountain Tourist Passport” at the Pingtung County Government, the Maolin National Scenic Area Administration, and the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications. The passport includes merchant coupons and raffle event information.
