The upcoming 4th New Taipei City International Environmental Art Festival will take place in the Tamsui area from October 13 to 21, featuring events such as an art street parade, environmental theater, and international performances. Some participating groups in the art street parade created elaborate carnival costumes using recycled materials such as aluminum foil packs and cans. The environmentally themed theater, which has been widely acclaimed over the years, will debut on October 20 this year. Titled “A Fantastical Journey through Five Tiger Hills,” it weaves together Tamsui’s history and involves over 400 amateur actors and community groups from Tamsui. The performance will unfold as a mobile show along Tamsui’s streets, presenting four historical tales including those of Liao Tianding and Cai Qian, offering the public a unique stroll along the Tamsui River.

This year’s art street parade features over 40 participating teams, each blending Eastern and Western cultural elements unique to Tamsui. With themes such as the snake and turtle of the Dark Emperor, British-style doll soldiers, and cherry blossom deity welcoming ceremonies, the event centers around two main themes: “Blessings for Tamsui – A Prayer Journey” and “Timeless Elegance – An International Love Story.” The parade will take place from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM on October 13, starting at Fort San Domingo in Tamsui and passing through Observation Tide Art Square, Mackay Statue Roundabout Park, Fu’an Temple, Golden Waterfront Plaza, and the plaza behind the Tamsui MRT Station. Some parade teams incorporate environmental messages by crafting unique carnival costumes from recycled materials such as aluminum foil packs, cans, rice bags, and plastic bottles.

The highly anticipated Civic Environmental Theater will debut this year under the theme “A Fantastical Journey through Five Tiger Hills.” Performances will be held from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM on October 20 and 21, featuring a mobile format with four stories: “The First Heroic Outlaw Liao Tianding,” “Pirate King Cai Qian,” “The Eight Villages’ Great Deity,” and “The Westerners’ Rebellion – Love of Mackay.” Starting at Observation Tide Art Square, the performances will continue at stops including the Phase III Wharf, Fu’an Temple Square, and Golden Waterfront Plaza, offering visitors a unique wandering experience through Tamsui’s streets.

International performances will be held from 2:00 PM on October 20 and 21 at Observation Tide Art Square, Phase III Wharf, Observation Tide Art Square, and the Art Corridor, featuring a total of four shows by groups such as the Broken Heart Frontline Alliance, Tiger Theater Troupe, and Tamsui Art Dance Troupe. These will include flamenco, dance drama, and internationally acclaimed variety acts combining yo-yos and diabolos. Starting at 1:00 PM on the same afternoon, an eco-friendly market and handmade arts market will also open on Tamsui Old Street, offering treats such as hand-painted cookies and freshly brewed artisan coffee.

Additionally, from 10:00 AM on October 19 to 28, Tamsui Denggong Elementary School will host the “Fantastical Tamsui – Artist-in-Residence Exhibition,” showcasing the preparation process, props, and performance records of participating schools. The exhibition highlights how school teachers, students, and artists developed a series of creative works based on Tamsui’s historical stories.
