The Gold Ecological Park in Ruifang District, New Taipei City, will launch the “Jinguashi Gold Mine Photo Exhibition” from January 18 to March 24, featuring remarkable vintage photographs depicting the mining settlement during the Japanese colonial era. To allow more people to learn about the former glory of this “Asia’s top precious metal mine,” the park has also organized two courses: “Shinto Beliefs in Japan and the Jinguashi Shrine” on January 19 and “The Railway to Jinguashi” on January 26. Each course is limited to 20 participants, and registration is now open.

The New Taipei City Gold Ecological Park stated that Jinguashi, once hailed as “Asia’s top precious metal mine,” reached its peak gold production of 55,000 taels per year during the Japanese colonial period, attracting tens of thousands of people to the Golden Mountain City. This long-buried history was captured through photography, and even a century later, it still shines with a faint but brilliant glow. The “Jinguashi Gold Mine Photo Exhibition” displays dozens of vintage photos from the “Jinguashi Gold Mine Photo Album” published in 1914 (Taisho 2) by Kiryuko Photo Studio in Keelung Prefecture, as well as photos taken by the Japanese Mining Co., Ltd. between 1933 and 1935. The exhibition is divided into five major themes: natural settlement landscapes, mining landscapes, transportation facilities, religious beliefs, and recreational life. Through a comparison of old photos and the present, it revisits the glorious history of the mine. The venue also offers interactive experiences allowing visitors to relive the details of life in the mines of the past.

To help the public gain a deeper understanding of the mining scenes depicted in the vintage photos, the Gold Ecological Park, in conjunction with the “Jinguashi Gold Mine Photo Exhibition,” has invited Assistant Professor Lin Chengwei from the Graduate Institute of Architecture and Cultural Heritage at Taipei National University of the Arts to give a lecture titled “Shinto Beliefs in Japan and the Jinguashi Shrine” on January 19 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The lecture will be held on the second floor of the Jinguashi Post Office within the Gold Ecological Park. On January 26 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, the Railway Culture Society’s Vice President, Gu Tingwei, will lead an outdoor field study course titled “The Railway to Jinguashi,” with the meeting point at the lobby of Ruifang Railway Station.
