Two major comets are set to visit in 2013—one is the PanSTARRS comet in March, and the other is the ISON comet (also translated as Ai Song) at the end of November. ISON is expected to be the brightest comet in nearly a century, with peak brightness possibly exceeding that of a full moon. Before ISON arrives, the PanSTARRS comet in mid-March can serve as a great warm-up for everyone. In fact, by general comet standards, the PanSTARRS comet is already an extraordinary sight. Currently, its predicted maximum brightness may range between +2 and -1 magnitude—either way, it surpasses the 1986 Halley’s Comet and qualifies as a once-in-several-years major comet.

To serve residents in central Taiwan, the National Science and Technology Museum will collaborate with the Construction and Planning Agency’s Taichung Metropolitan Park Management Station and the Taichung Astronomical Society to host a comet observation event. The event will take place from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on March 9th, on the bridge leading from the sundial sculpture to the outdoor plaza at the Construction and Planning Agency’s Taichung Metropolitan Park.

The site will feature two BS77 binoculars, one 10 cm refracting telescope with equatorial mount, and two additional telescopes provided by the Taichung Astronomical Society for public viewing, offering a rare chance to witness this astronomical marvel. This free event welcomes the public to attend on their own. For details, please visit the official website: www.nmns.edu.tw/.
