As March arrives with its warm spring blossoms, the vibrant colors of countless blooming flowers sweep away the chill of winter. The vitality of nature’s rebirth ushers in flower-viewing events across the country and beyond. Whether it’s Yangmingshan, Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village, Alishan, the Tainan Orchid Exhibition, and the East Coast flower seas in Taiwan, or the long-awaited cherry blossom seasons in Japan and Korea, and the tulip-celebrated Keukenhof Flower Exhibition in the Netherlands — travelers are eagerly gearing up to immerse themselves in these breathtaking floral landscapes.

Taipei — Yangmingshan

Yangmingshan, a famous cherry blossom destination in northern Taiwan, attracts numerous visitors each year during the flowering season. This year’s flower season activities will extend until March 17, and on March 9 and 10, there will be live music performances, tea art shows, glass DIY workshops, and flower bell dances. Following that, the Calla Lily Festival at Zhushan Lake in Yangmingshan will kick off on March 22. This year’s event plans to create calla lily landscapes themed around famous love stories from ancient to modern times and around the world in various farms. On weekends, small musical performances and ecological and cultural guided tours of Zhushan Lake will also be offered. For details, visit: 2013yms.com.tw.

Nantou — Sun Moon Lake

At Sun Moon Lake’s Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village, the cherry blossom season has ended, making way for the ongoing “Purple Love Lavender” series at the Shuisalan European Garden, which runs from now until April 7. Visitors can admire hundreds of thousands of Spanish lavender, featherleaf lavender, sawtooth lavender, and sage surrounding the central Roman fountain in the garden. Additionally, the “Purple Love March Music Concert,” held once a week, takes place every weekend, allowing guests to enjoy beautiful melodies surrounded by purple blooms. Chiayi — Alishan

The Alishan Cherry Blossom Season is set to begin on March 15. Alishan boasts a wide variety of cherry blossom species, including Oshima cherry, Gyoiko cherry, Beni-shidare cherry, and Thousand Islands cherry. The star of the season — and the most abundant — is the Yoshino cherry, an iconic variety that captivates visitors.

This year, visitors to Alishan can explore the blossoms via two main routes: one leading from Alishan Hotel through Plum Garden and Alishan Police Station to Zhushan Trailhead, or another starting from Zhaoping Train Station, passing through Zhaoping Park, Shouzhen Temple, Tree Spirit Pagoda, and Elephant Trunk Tree before returning to Alishan Hotel. Additionally, the Chiayi Forest District Office has constructed an elevated skywalk within Zhaoping Park, reaching a maximum height of 14 meters. The viewing platform at the end offers sweeping views of the majestic Mt. Tower and the elegant fir tree canopies, as well as panoramic sights of the vast cherry blossom seas from above. Visitors can enjoy the blossoms from both ground level and treetop perspectives. The skywalk is expected to open before the cherry blossom season. For details, visit: www.ali-nsa.net.

Tainan — Houpi Taiwan International Orchid Exhibition

Held annually in March, the Taiwan International Orchid Exhibition is ranked among the world’s top three orchid shows. This year, the Taiwan Orchid Biotechnology Park features key exhibition halls including the Orchid Grace Hall, the Blooming Competition Hall, the Orchid Dream Factory, and the Elegance Hall. Each space showcases large-scale landscape designs, individual flower competitions, displays by domestic and international exhibitors, as well as sales of orchids and gardening products. Hotels in Tainan have also incorporated orchid-themed entrance designs, allowing guests to continue enjoying the beauty of orchids upon returning to their accommodations.

In addition, Tainan has launched special “March Orchid Exhibition Month” promotions. From now until March 31, visitors can present their orchid exhibition tickets at fifty local Tainan tourism businesses to enjoy exclusive discounts. At the exhibition site, visitors can also sign up on-site for Orchid Exhibition tour packages, including options such as a half-day orchid exhibition tour plus a half-day in-depth tour of Houpi Wumeile, or a half-day orchid exhibition tour plus a half-day trip to Golden Jade Temple and the West Coast highlights. For details, visit: tour.tainan.gov.tw.
