From now until May 5, the Yingge Ceramics Museum is presenting the “Taiwan’s Ceramic Voice – Lin Tianfu’s 88th Ceramics Solo Exhibition.” Lin Tianfu, founder of the “Zhunan Snake Kiln,” has been immersed in traditional ceramic artistry for 75 years. He is highly skilled in all aspects of ceramics, and his solid craftsmanship earns him deep respect—widely known as “Teacher Tianfu.” Since turning 81, he has held solo exhibitions, this being his eighth. The current exhibition will also feature his latest creations.

This solo exhibition showcases nearly two years of brand-new works by Teacher Lin Tianfu, fired using a wood-firing technique at over 1,500 degrees Celsius by his son and fellow ceramic artist, Lin Ruihua. This process gives the pieces a naturally lustrous quality. Among them, the “Longevity Fortune Vase” takes the shape of an early-style brazier, enhanced by his unique openwork technique, featuring clean, flowing lines and exquisitely detailed chrysanthemum patterns, making it truly one of a kind. The “Pearl Jade Grinding Bowl” was once a household essential for grinding sweet potato or cassava starch. Teacher Lin has specially recreated this traditional vessel and carving method. Today, almost no one makes such bowls anymore—and they are crafted solely with a bamboo knife, demonstrating an extraordinary level of skill. These works have even drawn Japanese ceramic artists to observe them.

Lin Tianfu’s creations evolve traditional everyday pottery into forms with his own distinctive style. His ceramics reflect his character—free from any trace of artisanal affectation or ornate, meticulously carved artistry. Each piece embodies his lifelong integrity, optimism, and contentment, offering a sense of warm Taiwanese folk charm and the honest, unadorned beauty of traditional folk ceramics. A natural elegance, grace, and fluidity shine through.
