The Tokyo Firefly (Tokyo Hotaru) event is set to launch alongside the first anniversary of the Tokyo Skytree. This event will initiate the Galaxy Project "Symphony of Light," releasing 100,000 solar-powered LED lights along the Sumida River. These LED lights, which emit a glow reminiscent of fireflies and are named "Prayer Star®," will drift between Sakura Bridge and Azuma Bridge from 19:00 to 21:00 on the evening of May 25. The Milky Way-like nighttime scenery, combined with the special evening illumination of the Tokyo Skytree, promises a romantic spectacle we can’t wait to see.

When the Tokyo Firefly event was held last year on May 5 and 6, it attracted over 370,000 visitors. This year’s event coincides with the first anniversary of the Tokyo Skytree’s opening, and the overall scale is expected to be even more grand. The concept of the Tokyo Firefly event originates from childhood summer memories—the tiny glows of fireflies in the countryside—recreated in an urban setting to showcase a new elegance where nature and city blend seamlessly. As glowing modern technology floats quietly on the flowing river, you can enjoy the city nightlife while once again experiencing the coexistence of nature and urban life. The event also highlights that Tokyo is not only a bustling metropolis but also home to beautiful scenery worth sharing with the world.

In addition to close-up viewing, the event offers designated seating areas for the "Symphony of Light" experience and "Prayer Star" release participation, which require ticket purchase. Aside from enjoying a close view, participants can also receive a Prayer Star to make a wish and take part in the release experience. There are also premium terrace seating areas with better views. Visitors planning to attend can check the event’s official website for ticket purchase locations (URL: http://tokyo-hotaru.jp/).

There are many ways to enjoy the Tokyo Firefly event, such as taking a yakatabune boat for a close-up view and to admire the Tokyo Skytree from afar—a truly romantic experience. (Image source: Tokyo Hotaru event official website)

The event also promotes environmental awareness. In addition to the solar-powered LED "Prayer Star®" lights, more than 20 specialized recovery boats will be deployed along the Azuma Bridge and Kumoshima Bridge sections for cleanup. While enjoying this spectacular sight, you can also appreciate the organizers' commitment to sustainability. Moreover, the traditional yakatabune boats often seen on the Sumida River are also an excellent choice for viewing the event. You can take a yakatabune from Odaiba heading toward Asakusa in the evening to arrive at the Tokyo Firefly event site, immersing yourself in the romantic ambiance of a waterborne galaxy of lights while admiring the stunning nighttime view of the Tokyo Skytree.
