Summer is the peak tourist season in Hokkaido. The Furano area in central Hokkaido boasts purple lavender fields and flower gardens that look like rainbow carpets, together showcasing the unique romantic summer scenery of the northern land. To make it more convenient for flower-viewing tourists, the Furano Tourism Association has specially launched a limited-edition sightseeing bus called KURURU during the summer, which takes you to the main attractions and flower fields. In addition, want to know how to smartly explore Hokkaido? The JR Hokkaido Expert Group’s Railway Academy will start courses on June 15 at the Hays Hall of the Taichung New Student Training Center and on June 16 at the Eslite Bookstore Xinyi Store in Taipei, generously sharing insider travel tips for Hokkaido.

Summer vacation is coming. First-time independent travelers heading to Hokkaido, don’t forget to join the free JR Hokkaido Railway Academy course to get you started on your first rail-based independent trip with ease. (Image provided by JR Hokkaido)

Starting from the beginner class where you learn the basics of railways, you’ll be taught how to navigate Hokkaido’s transportation system and use great-value tickets to easily explore the northern land. Once you complete the course, even as a beginner, you won’t be afraid to take on independent travel. The advanced class provides a detailed introduction to an abundance of food and flower viewing strategies, plus exclusive insider information not known by locals. If you’re already preparing to depart, you can also book a consultation—just provide your upcoming itinerary, and the JR Hokkaido Expert Group will give you detailed answers based on your personal needs. Both events are completely free, no registration required, just line up on-site on the day. Each session has 200 seats available on a first-come, first-served basis until full.

Just by attending the Hokkaido Railway Academy class, you’ll receive a complimentary Furano Sightseeing Bus KURURU ticket (worth 1,000 yen). The first 100 attendees at each session will also get to try the 2013 Sapporo Dessert Award-winning treat, and there will be lucky draws for great prizes such as a 3-day-2-night Hokkaido independent travel package, railway passes, and limited-edition polar bear merchandise. You can even collect all 12 limited-edition Shiretoko deer commemorative stamps from different stations. Now the official Facebook fan page “REAL Hokkaido” https://www.facebook.com/hokkaidotrip is also running a lucky draw, offering air-shipped Hokkaido goodies.
