Recently, Yilan’s JiMi-themed Square has been insanely popular, even flooding Facebook feeds. But besides seeing JiMi in downtown Yilan, what else is there to do? Today, our editor Jin will not only introduce the JiMi Park to netizens, but will also secretly tell you about the Eslite Bookstore where you can enjoy the beautiful views of Lanyang, as well as the local residents’ recommended pork rib wonton noodles that are both delicious and affordable—letting netizens enjoy a rare half-day trip in downtown Yilan.

How to get to the JiMi-themed Square

For readers starting from Taipei, taking a direct Kavalan Bus to Yilan Railway Station’s back entrance is indeed a very convenient and comfortable option. But just after getting off and arriving at Yilan Railway Station, our editor Jin encountered the first problem: how to get to the front station? Don’t panic, just ask the station staff at the back entrance for a pass, and you can go directly through the underground passage inside the station to the front station, heading towards the long-awaited JiMi-themed Square.

After exiting the front entrance of Yilan Railway Station, please turn left and go straight. When you pass the Yilan Tourism Service Center, don’t forget to pick up a “Yilan City Food Map.” The map lists 46 food and souvenir shops, as well as shopping centers, parks, and historic sites in downtown Yilan—all drawn on the map, which is really significant for a casual trip. The tourism service center also has a dedicated JiMi merchandise section, giving JiMi fans even more reasons to shop.

Passing through the service center, the Japanese-style wooden building you see is the old dormitory area of the railway bureau. The classic old houses attract many tourists to take photos. Going further ahead, even though it’s not yet 8 a.m., there’s already a crowd up front. Yes, it’s the long-awaited JiMi-themed Square! Taiwan’s first JiMi-themed Square brings to life the flying bus from the picture book “Secrets in the Sky,” the boy and girl from “Turn Left, Turn Right,” and the suitcase from “The Underground” as they are depicted. Kids and adults alike are crazy about taking photos with the installation artworks, especially those featuring the boy and girl from “Turn Left, Turn Right” and “Secrets in the Sky,” which are the most popular. To take photos with them, you might even have to wait in line.

And the flying bus scene from “Secrets in the Sky” is deconstructed and presented through paintings, reliefs, and three-dimensional installations, making the bus carry the imagination of travel and joyful moods up into the sky. Each window frames a beautiful view, and the deconstructed front and back sections of the bus are embedded into two walls, with a three-dimensional flying elk and suitcase in the middle, blending with the JiMi-themed Park and the future transit station into an ever-flowing painting.

Don’t netizens feel like something’s missing? You guys are definitely super fans of JiMi! The boy and girl waiting for the bus in the picture book “Secrets in the Sky” are not placed in the same area as those in “Turn Left, Turn Right.” You’ll have to cross the street to the other side to get up close with the “Secrets in the Sky” characters. Crossing the street, sunlight shines on the dense greenery ahead, turning the short walk to the “Secrets in the Sky” scene into a lush tree-lined tunnel, adding a leisurely vibe to the JiMi exploration.
