Travel enthusiasts who love rail journeys have long dreamed of exploring Europe by train. However, those planning to embark on a European rail adventure in the first half of next year should take note. As train ticket prices in Europe for 2014 have been confirmed to rise, with an average increase of 5%, if you’re set to travel in the first half of 2014, you can save by booking your tickets before December 31. Tickets purchased will remain valid for six months. For example, the cost of a 15-day continuous pass for 24 European countries could be reduced by over a thousand yuan—that’s equivalent to a whole month’s worth of free lattes priced at 45 yuan each.

Additionally, for those wanting to explore France while also visiting multiple other countries, options such as the 24-country European Rail Pass or two-country passes like France-Germany, France-Switzerland, or France-Italy are available, all with average increases under 3%. In 2014, Slovakia will be added to the European Select 3, 4, or 5 Countries Rail Pass, allowing travelers to choose 3 to 5 neighboring countries from a total of 25 and enjoy scenic journeys at great value.

As for those planning a trip to Switzerland, here’s some good news. The Swiss Travel System individual pass is the only one that won’t increase in price—in fact, it’s getting cheaper—and it comes with extra perks. These include riding various scenic trains, such as the Golden Pass, without purchasing additional tickets (only a reservation fee is required), free entry to 400 museums, discounts at numerous hotels, and city tour offers.
