Beimen, also known as Cheng'en Gate, is a key landmark in the western part of old Taipei City. The area is surrounded by many historic buildings and is one of the must-visit spots for many Japanese and Korean tourists traveling to Taiwan. Among them is a legendary, time-honored pig’s trotter rice spot that's a favorite among foodies. Today, let’s dig in with our readers and the Scenic Spot Guide!

The legendary pig’s trotter rice that foodies rave about.

Zhengji Pig’s Trotter Rice is located on Yanping South Road, just behind Taipei’s Beimen. This second-generation family-run eatery has been around for over sixty years and is famous among gourmets for its pig’s trotter rice and Dongpo pork rice. What makes it truly unforgettable is its aged marinade—rich meat flavors paired with various side dishes create this exceptional culinary masterpiece.

Dreamy pig’s trotter rice.

This bowl of pig’s trotter rice, made with meticulous care by the owner, features trotters marinated in aged broth and served with pickled mustard greens, pickled cucumbers, cabbage, and braised duck eggs, offering a rich variety. The trotters have a dark golden hue on the surface, are deeply flavorful, and have a tender texture. Taking big bites of meat and scooping up hot rice is simply satisfying.

Dongpo pork rice braised to a dark golden hue.

For the Dongpo pork rice, the pork belly is tied with cotton string before braising and then placed directly on top of the rice. With its skin, fat, and lean layers, each bite offers a distinct texture. Fans of Dongpo pork will absolutely love it and leave the table feeling completely satisfied.

Braised dried tofu and chicken rolls.

The shop also offers a variety of braised side dishes for diners to add. The Scenic Spot Guide ordered dried tofu and the boss-recommended chicken rolls. The dried tofu itself is very flavorful—you won’t need any extra sauce. As for the chicken rolls, since the Scenic Spot Guide isn’t a big fan, no strong opinion is given—but the gentleman at the next table ordered some and seemed to enjoy them immensely, so they’re probably pretty good.
