Daytime flower viewing, nighttime firefly encounters — The Baxianshan Tung Blossom and Firefly Season launches with limited spots

Every year from April to May, Baxianshan enters the season when tung blossoms bloom and dance in the wind. The tung trees begin to shed their snowy white petals, carpeting the trails and signaling the start of the firefly mating season. As night falls, “starry lights” slowly rise from the grass, their flickering glow and graceful dances bringing peace to the heart. The Baxianshan Nature Education Center will hold four sessions of the “Tung Blossom and Firefly Season” event on April 26–27 and May 3–4, offering the public a chance to experience Baxianshan’s snow-like tung blossoms and sparkling fireflies.

Li Yanshou, director of the Dongshi Forest District Office, noted that Baxianshan is one of central Taiwan’s prime firefly-watching destinations. In addition to the common “black-winged firefly,” the area is home to many varieties, including the “red-chested black-winged firefly” and “small red-chested black-winged firefly” with their glowing red lights, as well as the petite and adorable “Sophronia lacewing firefly.” Visitors may also spot the protected species “yellow-chested black-winged firefly” fluttering gracefully within the park.

 

This “Tung Blossom and Firefly Season” event includes guided forest bathing trail tours, firefly ecology lectures, and outdoor firefly viewing in Baxianshan. Each session is limited to 50 participants, with a fee of NT$250 per person covering admission, activity materials, and course costs.
