Spring has sprung and flowers are in full bloom—what floral sights can you enjoy in New Taipei City in April? The former city flower, the "azalea," is vigorous and blooms during spring, showcasing a variety of bright, colorful blossoms. The "Bauhinia," also known as the tropical cherry blossom, blooms from March to April. Its leaves resemble deer hooves, and when in bloom, the tree is covered with peach to purple flowers with few leaves. The pinkish-purple "chinaberry flowers" come from a tall deciduous tree native to the region, with clusters of small, umbrella-like blooms that emit a subtle, elegant fragrance. Similarly pinkish-purple, "wisteria" is an ornamental garden plant that blooms from late March to early April, with cascading clusters of flowers that hang from trellises like wind chimes. The "pussy willow" blooms in April with pure white flowers that cover the treetops like snow, hence its nickname "April Snow." The short-blooming "golden trumpet tree" features bright yellow flowers and only blooms for about one to ten days. The "kapok tree," commonly known as the "tree of heroes," is a large deciduous tree with a straight trunk covered in bumpy thorns. In April, it blooms with orange-red to fiery red flowers, contrasted by dark brown sepals—this contrast further highlights the kapok’s symbolic meaning of "passion."
