Located around Sisanzhangli in Xinyi District, near the former 44th South Village—one of the military dependents’ villages built after the Kuomintang relocated to Taiwan. Situated south of the 44th Arsenal, it came to be known as the 44th South Village. Though the village’s original look has faded over time, you can still faintly sense its unique atmosphere in the alleys. This snack shop that preserves the old military village flavors is especially beloved by local foodies. Today, join us as we take you and our travel editor for a taste!

The nostalgic red-on-white signboard of Nan Village Snack Shop.

Nan Village Snack Shop is tucked away in an alley along Zhuangjing Road in Xinyi District. It wasn’t until after eating that our travel editor realized there are actually two Nan Village Snack Shops on Zhuangjing Road—and she visited the one opposite Xinyi Junior High School. She arrived around 1 p.m., and the place was still bustling with customers coming and going, a testament to how delicious the food is.

Signature stir-fried noodles.

Nan Village Snack Shop is known for its variety of noodles, braised dishes, and stir-fries. Among them, the signature stir-fried noodles with military village flair are a must-try favorite among food connoisseurs. Made with a soy sauce base, and stir-fried quickly with shredded pork, scrambled egg, and greens, its flavor is simple yet incredibly irresistible—once you start, you just can’t stop.

The noodles used for the cold noodles are similar to those in the stir-fried version.

Since it was a bit warm the day our editor visited, she also ordered a plate of cold noodles. The menu noted that cold noodles might take a little while, which she guessed was because they’re made fresh to order, then boiled and chilled before serving. But the chewy texture of the noodles was truly outstanding, and paired with the aroma of sesame sauce, it was absolutely addictive.

Tomato and egg stir-fry.

Our editor didn’t really pay attention to prices when ordering, but was surprised to find the tomato and egg stir-fry cost 170 NT. That said, both the eggs and tomatoes were generously portioned, and unlike many bento shops that use ketchup, this version truly lets you enjoy the flavor of the eggs and fresh tomato juice.
