Around February each year, the wind and snow of Hokkaido pile up into a world of silver white. The already elegant Otaru Canal, covered in pristine white snow, gains an even more dreamy white ambiance. The classic, nostalgic red-brick warehouses along the shore, as well as the crystal-clear glass artworks, all captivate visitors with their unique charm.

In winter, the Otaru Canal becomes gentle and romantic. Especially since 1999, local residents have spontaneously initiated the Otaru Snow Light Path Festival, placing candles along the canal. The soft glow of the candles illuminates the quaint streets, filling the city with a dreamy and colorful atmosphere. The 17th Otaru Snow Road in 2015 is also scheduled to take place from February 6th to 15th.
