Three years ago, Japanese rising photographer Kotori Kawashima shot to fame in Taiwan and Japan with his work “Mirai-chan.” In March 2015, he was awarded the prestigious Kimura Ihei Award, often dubbed the “Oscars of Japanese photography.” His winning series, the photobook “Star,” themed around Taiwan, documents ordinary people, animals, and street scenes across the island. The creation process took three years, involving over 70,000 film exposures. Through his lens, Kawashima captured every touching moment of life in Taiwan.

In “Star,” Kotori Kawashima photographed not only people from various parts of Taiwan but also animals, street scenes, and more. To him, everything shone like an idol. By capturing these radiant moments, the work “Star” came to life. To authentically represent every instant captured in Taiwan, the photographic works themselves exude a strong local Taiwanese atmosphere. The color scheme of the photobook’s layout also draws on the colorful hues of Taiwanese sun umbrellas that Kawashima saw in Taitung. Through these concrete images of Taiwan, the book conveys the uniquely Taiwanese essence of “Star.”

At the same time, to preserve the original composition of each piece, the photobook is specially designed with a mix of landscape and portrait orientations, aiming to allow readers to see the photographer’s original intent and faithfully document the beauty of this land, sharing the wonders of Taiwan with everyone. The “Star” photobook is currently exclusively available at Eslite bookstores and Eslite’s online bookstore. Before the exhibition begins, we invite you to enjoy the beautiful Taiwan through Kotori Kawashima’s eyes and rediscover that enduring warmth and passion in your heart.
