The Tokyo JR Yamanote Line, beloved by travelers to Japan, introduced a new train on November 30, replacing the E231 series 500 with the E235 series. The new train features a slightly rounded, square-shaped front, and its fresh design has been humorously compared by Japanese netizens to an app icon on a smartphone. The news sparked widespread discussion after being announced in July.

The concept behind the new E235 series train centers around the keyword "a train that interacts with passengers and society." Not only are the windows larger, but the air conditioning system has also been upgraded. The priority seating area (reserved seats) features additional open space to accommodate wheelchairs or strollers, and the priority zone is accented with pink for added thoughtfulness.

There were initial reports that the hanging advertisements in the center of the train cars would be removed, but it has been confirmed that they will remain on the new trains. Center advertisements are prime visual focal points with high advertising value. Additionally, new LCD screens have been installed in the train cars, which are expected to boost advertising revenue on the Yamanote Line. These can also be marketed as “Yamanote Line exclusive ads,” creating a buzzworthy feature.

After 13 years of service, the E231 series 500 officially retired on November 29. On your next trip to Tokyo, be sure to experience the comfort and unique features of the new Yamanote Line trains.
