Located in Zhuoxi Township, Hualien, the Walami Trail stretches approximately 13.5 kilometers. With no significant climbs along the way, it’s an easy and pleasant trail to hike. The name ‘Walami’ comes from the Bunun language word for fern, which explains why the environment here is damp and cool in summer, while in winter, the broadleaf trees begin to turn red and yellow, creating a richly colored, layered mountain landscape that is truly beautiful.

The Walami Trail can be divided into three sections: “Trailhead to Shanfeng Waterfall” (front section), “Shanfeng Waterfall to Jiashin” (middle section), and “Jiashin to Walami Mountain Hut” (rear section). The front section is the easiest and suitable for general tourists or family outings, the middle section is ideal for hikers, and the rear section requires an entry permit, making it suitable for campers or those with hiking experience.

Scenic highlights along the Walami Trail include the Shanfeng Waterfall, as well as lush low-altitude broadleaf forests and a verdant fern path densely covered with kidney ferns. In autumn, you can also admire the wild red foliage of maple and acer trees. Further along, you’ll find a historically significant monument commemorating the Bunun people’s resistance against Japanese rule. Additionally, crossing the Huangma No. 1 Suspension Bridge offers a sweeping view of the majestic Lakulaku River Valley.

This area features well-preserved primary and secondary forests, providing an ideal habitat for wildlife. You might spot leaping macaques or the colorful Mikado pheasant, and it’s also one of the largest habitats of the Formosan black bear in Taiwan. After your hike, you can head to the century-old hot spring known as Antong for a relaxing soak.
