Shrunk Ruins Gassho Village Railway Landmark – Japan’s Only Thatched-Station

Japan’s traditional architectural features, along with its quaint railways and stations, are must-visit attractions for many travelers. Located in Shimogō Town, Fukushima Prefecture, “Yunokami Onsen Station” is a key stop on the route to Ōuchi-juku and is also one of the Tohoku Hyakusen Stations, as well as Japan’s only station built entirely with a thatched roof (kayabuki), making it a distinctive attraction not to be missed by railway enthusiasts.

Although Yunokami Onsen Station is just a small stop, it exudes a strong Edo-period atmosphere. The station features an irori (traditional sunken hearth) and sells local specialties. The hearth remains lit year-round and, aside from adding to the ambiance for visitors, also helps drive away insects that may nest in the thatched roof using smoke. In addition, there is a spacious free foot bath nearby where travelers can soak their feet while leisurely watching trains arrive.
