Hallstatt (German: Hallstatt), a lakeside town in Austria’s Salzkammergut region, sits at an elevation of 511 meters. It gets its name from the salt mines near the village. Historically, this area became wealthy due to salt production. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 and is now a highly popular tourist destination.

The origin of the name Hallstatt: “Hall” comes from the Celtic word for “salt,” while “statt” means “town” in German. Due to the undulating terrain, houses are built clinging to the mountainsides, which has helped keep the population at a certain level, perfectly fitting its reputation as a lakeside town.

The buildings clinging to the mountainside, together with the majestic mountain landscape, create an unforgettable, breathtakingly beautiful scene.

Colorful little houses stand one after another among the mountains, forming a beautiful picture. Most of the town’s buildings are still made of wood, preserving their traditional style.
