Taipei City’s Binjiang Street Lane 180 is a well-known aircraft-spotting location, popularly called “Aircraft Alley,” where visitors can closely admire the impressive sight of planes taking off and landing. Recently, however, it was reported that due to aviation safety issues, the Civil Aeronautics Administration would designate Aircraft Alley as a restricted area by the end of 2018. Upon hearing the news, many people flocked to the alley to take photos, fearing they might no longer be able to enjoy the view of planes there in the future.

Regarding the news that Aircraft Alley will be designated as a restricted area and closed by the end of the year, the Civil Aeronautics Administration clarified that in order to comply with the latest international standards, Songshan Airport needs to widen its runway, which requires acquiring land for airport use. However, due to the complexity of the procedures and planning, and the uncertainty of the renovation project, demolition and widening are not expected to begin until 2020 at the earliest. Moreover, Aircraft Alley will only undergo minor construction for rerouting, and the new road will be slightly farther from the airport. The alley will not be closed, and visitors can still enjoy watching planes take off and land.

Taipei’s top aircraft-spotting spot, “Aircraft Alley,” is not only a favorite among plane enthusiasts but also a secret retreat for those feeling down, who come here to shout and vent amid the thunderous roar of planes taking off and landing. It’s also a popular dating spot for couples, who visit to take photos. Standing in the middle of the alley, waiting for a plane to approach, and pressing the shutter at just the right moment has become one of the classic photos to take at Aircraft Alley.

Everyone can stop worrying about Aircraft Alley disappearing—it has been confirmed that the alley will not be closed, but will only be slightly rerouted. The original Aircraft Alley will be moved outward by about 20 feet, and in the future, visitors will still be able to enjoy watching planes take off and land here, take close-up photos with the aircraft.
